Sandwich Sandwich

A year ago, nobody was organising the weekend around a sandwich.

Now Dubai has queues, limited drops and airport passengers allowing extra time for lunch. The city’s latest food obsession is not caviar, omakase or another cheesecake with something poured over it.

It's bread and filling.

The difference is that these are no longer afterthought sandwiches rescued from a fridge. The bread matters. The meat is cured in-house. Chefs are involved. Quantities are limited, which means lunch now requires the organisational skills previously reserved for brunch.

Here's where to start.

KLAY by Karak House

Dubai Mall · The Viral One

KLAY has taken the smash burger and removed the bun from the conversation.

Its beef patty comes wrapped in flaky paratha, creating a gloriously untidy meeting between burger culture and the bread Dubai already knows very well. It sounds like internet bait. Then you eat it and understand the queue.

KLAY comes from Karak House and builds its menu around reworked parathas and karak. The smash burger version is the obvious first order.

This is technically not a sandwich in the strictest sense. We have reviewed the evidence and decided nobody cares.

Go for: The smash burger paratha and karak.

Know before you go: Dubai Mall crowds are considerably less charming when you are hungry. Avoid the lunch and dinner rush if possible.

Dubai International · The Airport One

Florence’s famous sandwich shop has brought its schiacciata to Dubai International Airport.

The Tuscan flatbread is baked fresh and filled generously with cured meats, cheeses and rich Italian spreads. This is airport food that deserves to be part of the travel plan, rather than something bought because boarding starts in nine minutes.

There is one important catch. The Dubai outpost is inside Terminal 3’s C Gates departure area. It's not a sandwich you can casually collect from the roadside before going home.

Check your departure gate before becoming emotionally invested.

Go for: A schiacciata loaded with Tuscan cured meat and cheese.

“The sandwich has gone from emergency desk lunch to something people set alarms for. Dubai does not do half measures.”

The Sandwich Room at The Guild

DIFC · The Limited Drop

The Guild opens its back door at noon every Thursday and Friday and starts handing out hot sandwiches.

There are three choices: beef, chicken or lamb. They are made fresh, served hot and available until 2pm or until the kitchen sells out. Usually, the sandwiches make the decision first.

The Sandwich Room is takeaway only, so do not arrive expecting a leisurely table in The Guild. Collect lunch, find somewhere nearby and accept that eating it neatly was never a realistic goal.

No reservations. No complicated menu. Just get there early.

Go for: Whichever of the three has not sold out while you were discussing it.

Hudson & Rye

DIFC Square · The Proper Deli

Hudson & Rye is Dubai’s full New York deli experience, complete with house-made pastrami, rye bread and the sort of sandwich that makes a nap feel medically sensible.

Start with the Reuben, priced at AED 79. It comes with pastrami or roast turkey, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing on rye.

The house-made pastrami on rye costs AED 75, while the tuna melt is AED 58. Breakfast sandwiches arrive on homemade American-style biscuits, and New York cheesecake is waiting for anyone still feeling ambitious.

Unlike The Sandwich Room, Hudson & Rye serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. There is no need to stage a midday escape from the office, although the Reuben remains a convincing reason to try.

Go for: The pastrami Reuben. Obvs.

Sandwich Sandwich

Dubai · The One We Are Still Waiting For

British brand Sandwich Sandwich announced Dubai as its first international location, promising the towering fillings and freshly baked bread that built queues in Bristol and London.

The problem is that the proposed early-2026 opening has passed without a confirmed Dubai address, opening date or live booking page.

So yes, it is coming. No, do not send the office downstairs to look for it yet.

Until the brand confirms otherwise, Sandwich Sandwich belongs on the watchlist, not the lunch rota.

Wait for: A verified address and opening date.

Why Sandwiches, and Why Now?

Because lunch got bored.

These places put serious thought into bread, fillings and sauces without turning every meal into a two-hour booking. You can eat well, get back to your day and still spend the afternoon thinking about what was inside the rye.

Dubai will always have tasting menus and extravagant brunches. Sometimes, though, the correct answer is a sandwich requiring both hands.
